The BMW M3 E46 is powered by the M-tuned S54 engine which is a high revving DOHC 3.2L inline six-cylinder. This engine produces 343 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque in European trim and 333 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque in North America due to catalytic converters closer to engine exhaust ports. The S54 features six independent throttle bodies that are electronically operated “drive-by-wire” with no cable. This engine was mated to either a standard six-speed Getrag transmission or a optional SMG drivelogic (SMG II) transmission which uses the standard Getrag six-speed with a electro-hydraulically actuated clutch pedal.

In 2001, BMW produced the E46 M3 GTR that was powered by a 4.0L (3,997cc) V8 (P60B40) that produces 493 horsepower. This car went on to win the GT2 class American Le Mans Series in 2001. However, due to regulation changes in 2002 the M3 GTR was no longer qualified to compete. BMW produced 10 road going GTRs at a price of $218,000 each in 2001.

In 2004, BMW produced 1,400 limited edition versions of the M3 called the CSL. The CSL (Coupé Sport Leichtbau/Coupe Sport Lightweight) was never available in the North American market. BMW M3 E46 was able to reduce the over all weight by 140kg (240lbs) by adding lightweight carbon fiber body pieces, removing most of the sound insulation, electric seats, navigation. The main focus was to retain the original 50/50 weight distribution of the E46 so weight was reduced in key areas on the chassis. The S54 engine is lightly tuned for a 17 horsepower over the standard European BMW M3 E46. The CSL was only available with the SMG II transmission. This model came with distinct 19-inch BBS wheels and semi-slick Michelin Pilot Sport Cup racing tires.
