General Motors chose the Daytona 500 to unveil the 2014 Chevrolet SS which will mark the return of full-size, rear-wheel-drive performance sedans to the United States market. It has been 17 years now since a car like this has been offered by Chevrolet, however the Pontiac G8 was based on the same Holden Commodore platform. I think it is fantastic that they are offering this car in North America and it should be successful. You can expect this car to arrive in showrooms in the forth quarter of 2013.

Holden is General Motors subsidiary from Australia and they still carry the torch for fans of rear-wheel-drive sedans. Do you remember the Pontiac G8? It was a popular model among enthusiasts when it was released in the United States and it was based on the Holden VE Commodore. Unfortunately it was too late to stop Pontiac from closing its doors. This new 2014 Chevrolet SS is based on the VF Commodore which is a re-skin of its predecessor the VE Commodore. You can see that the Styling is more inline with new GM models such as the Volt and Cruze models. The name of this GM platform is called the Zeta and the 2014 Chevrolet SS will be manufactured by Holden in Australia.

The brakes are four piston calipers up from and single piston caliper in the 2014 Chevrolet SS rear sourced from Brembo. weight distribution is close to 50/50 which helps with handling and stability. Weight reduction comes in the from of use of aluminum in the construction of the hood and trunk lid. I like to see more rear-wheel-drive vehicles like this one from GM. What do you think about this car? Leave your thoughts in the comment section below. One think you have to admit is the interior in this car is so much better than the 1996 Chevy SS.

2014 Chevrolet SS decided on using the LS3 6.2-liter V8 to power the 2014 SS. This engine is the same as the one found in the 2013 C6 Chevrolet Corvette and it develops a healthy 415 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque. The only transmission available will be a paddle shifted six-speed automatic which might disappoint some people that prefer a manual six-speed. The final drive ratio is 3.27 which helps boost acceleration. Chevy is estimating that zero to 60 mph will arrive in about five seconds but that might be conservative. More information and videos should be available as this performance sedan gets closer to launch.
