The first generation BMW M5 E28 made its debut at the 1984 Amsterdam Motor Show. This would be the first of the BMW mid-size super sedan based on the 5-Series. The purpose of this car was to fill the need in the market for a car to provide the carrying capacity of a sedan, yet having the performance characteristics of a sports car. Every single BMW M5 E28 was hand built between 1985 and 1988, with a total of 2,191 cars being produced. The E28 M5 was replaced with the E34 M5.

The BMW M5 E28 was similar to the E24 M6 in that it used a variant of the same engine used in the BMW M1 super car. The M88/3 used in the M5 produced 282 horsepower however the S38 B35 catalyzed version used in North America produced 256 horsepower. BMW stated that 0-60 acceleration times of 6.2 seconds for the Euro Spec and 6.5 seconds for the North American Spec. Top speed for the European model is 153 mph, while the United States and Canada model topped out at 148 mph.
