The BMW 2002 Turbo was the first production car in Europe to be equipped with a turbocharger. The 2002 is the most famous version of the BMW New Class line of compact sedans and coupes that started production in 1968 and lasted until 1976. These cars are the predecessor to the BMW 3-Series. The BMW 2002 Turbo was introduced at the 1973 Frankfurt Auto Show equipped with a Kopp & Kausch turbocharger making it the fastest and most powerful version of the 2002 “New Class” offered by BMW. This model was never officially sold in the United States but several have been imported over the years.

In 1969, BMW 2002 Turbo competed in the European Touring Car Championship and won using a turbo version of the 1968 2002. In 1973, The this forced-induction model was made available to the public. While this model did have a big performance gain over the naturally aspirated version, this model suffered from turbo lag and because of this lag made the BMW 2002 Turbo tricky to drive and effected handling. When power came it came with a sudden burst and that made driving corners a bit scary at times. With flared fenders and BMW Motorsport decals and stripes, this model is easy to identify. Only 1,672 were built between July 1973 and July 1975.

The engine was a turbocharged version of the same 2.0L you would find in the BMW 2002 Turbo. It produced 170 horsepower at 5800 rpm. Acceleration times were quick, 0-60 mph in 6.9 seconds, top speed of 130 mph. This car was also came with a heavy duty clutch and a limited slip differential.
