The first M power 3 series BMW was the BMW M3 E30 built from 1986 to 1992 and was available as a 2-door coupe or a 2-door convertible. One of the main reasons for the M3′s existence was to homologate the M3 for Group A Touring Car racing. It was built to compete with their rival Mercedes-Benz, who had introduced their W201 190E in 1983. The BMW M3 E30 is had many improvements over the standard E30 3 series. The body used 12 unique body panels to improve aerodynamics. Front and rear brakes were improved with upgraded calipers, rotors and a special brake master cylinder. The BMW M3 E30 participated in touring car championships around the world and is a multiple winner of Guia Race, 24 Hours Nürburgring and Spa 24 Hours.

The BMW M3 E30 was powered by the BMW S14 engine which had a 2.5L, 2.3L, and a 2.0L variants. The 2.5L version produces 235 horsepower and was used in the limited edition Sport Evolution models to meet motor-sport homologation requirements. The 2.3L produces 192 to 197 horsepower and is found in the rest of the BMW M3 E30. The 2.0L version was used in the 320is built for the Portuguese and Italian markets. The S14 featured individual throttle bodies and is based on the BMW M10 engine.

Sports Car International named the BMW M3 E30 sixth on the list of “Top Sports Cars of the 1980s”. Automobile Magazine included the BMW M3 E30 in their “5 greatest drivers cars of all time”. The BMW M3 E30 has become a modern classic and is sought after by collectors. The E30 M3 would be replaced by the E36 M3.
