The BMW M5 E60 was designed by Chis Bangle and built from 2005 to 2010 in Dingolfing, Germany with a total of 20,547 cars being produced (19,522 sedans and 1,025 wagons). The BMW M5 E60 would replace the E39 M5 and become the next in a long line of BMW mid-size performance sedans and would eventually be replaced by the F10 M5 in 2011.

The engine used in the BMW M5 E60 is a 5.0L (4,999cc) V10 that produces 500 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque. This engine is essentially based on the BMW V10 used in the Formula 1 racing cars. The engine can be drivien in three power modes; P400 which limits power to 395 bhp, P500 which releases full power of 500 bhp, and P500 S which offers full power and more sensitive throttle response.

The BMW M5 E60 Getrag SMG III single clutch sequential seven-speed semi-automatic transmission was used in the E60 M5. This transmission has several adjustments from softer shifting to more aggressive engagements. Shifting can be done using the console shifter or the BMW M5 E60 paddle shifters mounted to the steering wheel. In 2006 a conventional six-speed manual transmission became available in North America and the Getrag SMG III became a option.

At the time of its release, the BMW M5 E60 was the most powerful mid-size sedan on the market, besting its direct rivals the Audi RS6 and the Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG. This was quite impressive because the BMW M5 E60 was naturally asperated while Audi and Mercedes used forced induction in the form of twin turbochargers on the RS6 and a supercharger on the E55.

The power war between the German auto manufactures continued and the BMW M5 E60 has since been overtaken by more powerful models such as the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG. The BMW M5 E60can accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 4.1 seconds and had a delimited top speed of 204 mph (electronically limited to 155 mph in some markets).

The BMW M5 E60 was the most successful M5 in terms of sales. Even despite being on the market for one year less than the E39 M5 and receiving criticisms about the iDrive interface and Chris Bangles designed chassis.
